RM-62 Aerial Tow Target Reeling Machine-Launcher
The RM-62 Tow Reel is a semi-automatic, ram-air, turbine-driven reeling machine designed to reel out, stop, reel in and recover an aerial towed vehicle attached to the tow reel by a 0.5” towline. The towline is stored on a spool and is controlled and guided during reel-in and reel-out by a levelwind and a system of sheaves. Reeling speeds and tow vehicle recovery are automatically controlled by the Microprocessor Logic Control Module (MLCM).
The tow reel electrical system executes commands from a cockpit installed panel and generates function and status information signals from tow reel sensors. A fail safe disc brake prevents turbine and towline spool rotation when the tow reel is not in the reeling mode. An electrically operated motor actuates the tow vehicle latch mechanism. A redundant towline cutting system employs impulse cartridges to sever the towline if an emergency cut is required.

The RM-62 Aerial Tow Target Reeling Machine-Launcher was developed to operate on modern fighter jet aircraft and civil aircraft for the purpose of supporting short towline length air-to-air gunnery and long towline length surface-to-air missile target missions. The machine is a derivative of the RM-24, RM-30B and RMK-35 machines. It has the load and towline capacity and reeling speed of the RMK-19, powered by an enclosed fixed bladed turbine. The system design is based on the use of qualified parts and support equipment.
